Care for puppies

In our kennel

Approximately one month after mating, we take a female to the vet for the ultrasound treatment for pregnancy confirmation and if possible, for information about the supposed number of puppies.

Before birth

The female switches to kibbles for pregnant and lactating female once preganancy is comfirmed and we increase the dosage week after week. Besides kibbles our females get meat, food supplements and vitamins. We see a vet about 10 days before estimated day of delivery to make sure everything is OK. Labor usually occurs on the 60th day, so we do not underestimate anything and keep a close watch. We are present at birth and help the future mummy. Our support is very important tp her, we help to get off puppies from amniotic sac immediately after the birth, we cut the umbilical cords, make a note about the time of the birth, weigh puppies and walk the female during the birth if needed. It is also necessary to take care of the puppy and the female in the litter box and keep it clean. When the birth is over, the female is taken to the vet for a check-up, or he comes to us to see if everything is all right and if she has another puppy inside her. The first 14 days are very important after the birth. Our presence at the female and the puppies is necessary, we take care of walking and feeding the female, and if the female has little milk, it is also necessary to feed the puppies from a bottle. There is also some paperwork to be done, the family debate to choose names for the puppies, outfits for puppies to their new homes shouldn´t be forgotten, and, last but not least, the selection of the best owners for our pets from the waiting list.

After birth

The mummy will be dewormed the week after the birth, and the puppies a week later. We tidy up the litter box every morning and a few times per day again, breast feeding (complementary food if needed). We try the first complementary food at the age of 3 weeks – milk from a bowl, we replace the milk with mush for the puppies. Gradually, dry food is implemented from 4th week of age and the puppies are dewormed again. We start to dose meat with rice, sometimes we add yoghurt or curd cheese with fruits and cookies. Gradually, we socialize in the form of future owners´ visits. Another deworming will occur in 6th week and vaccination and chipping a week after. Big paperwork starts in these days. We prepare the agreements, manuals and outfits for their new homes. Each puppy will get a toy, which we leave in the nestle with puppies and their mummy in order to smell familiar scents of familiar enviroment with it. During the 7th -8th week the puppies are leaving us for their new homes.
